AmeriCorps members have constructed numerous lakeside resort cabins on the banks of Hugo Lake. Members are shown midway through work on one of the cabins. The multi-year project included a variety of activities at Hugo Lake State Park along with assistance in Self-Help Housing Program efforts.
AmeriCorps members are Americans of all ages who have made a commitment to serve their communities and country.
AmeriCorps has four main goals:
1. Getting Things Done: AmeriCorps members help communities solve problems in the areas of education, public safety, the environment, and other human needs by serving directly and by getting other people to serve as volunteers.
2. Strengthening Communities: AmeriCorps members help unite individuals from all backgrounds - and organizations of all kinds - in a common effort to improve communities.
3. Encouraging Responsibility: AmeriCorps members explore and exercise their responsibilities to their communities, their families, and themselves during their service experience and throughout their lives.
4. Expanding Opportunities: AmeriCorps helps those who help America. AmeriCorps members receive awards to further their education or to pay back student loans. They also gain valuable job experience, specialized training, and other skills.
Little Dixie's AmeriCorps program has provided jobs and job training for local residents, while providing the area with a boost in tourism infrastructure at the same time.
Little Dixie's AmeriCorps Members are currently working on projects at Beavers Bend State Park, the City of Hugo, and Oklahoma Forestry Service at Idabel.
A few of the AmeriCorps members are shown with their construction supervisors in front of one of the rustic cabins built overlooking Hugo Lake. The group has constructed 10 larger resort cabins and 10 of these smaller units.
